Granite City police are investigating an auto accident that ended with an SUV crashing into a building on Thursday night. At approximately 12:40 a.m. Friday morning, the 20-year-old male driver was operating a Chevy Blazer on Iowa Street at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a parked car in the parking lot of Schnucks. The driver then fled from the scene of the accident striking a curb causing the vehicle to become airborne and ejecting the driver. The vehicle then collided with a vacant building near the intersection of Nameoki Road and Iowa Street. The driver landed in the middle of Nameoki Road and was transported by air to a St. Louis hospital where he is listed in serious condition. Police are investigating the accident and have not determined what caused the accident.
Car accidents happened thousands of times each day and a large portion of those accidents are preventable. Individuals that sustain injuries can incur medical bills, lost wages if time off work is required, and emotional damage. Those injured should be able to focus their energy on recovering from the accident and not attempting to negotiate with insurance companies.
