A Southern Illinois University Edwardsville student sustained injuries in an explosion on Tuesday afternoon. The school accident occurred in a science lab in the science building that has recently been constructed. University officials claim a 23-year-old male student was working with a beaker filled with tetrahydrofuran and potassium when it exploded. The student sustained cuts to his hands and burns to his arms. He received immediate treatment for the burns and cuts then was transported by ambulance to a hospital. The explosion ignited a fire that the Edwardsville Fire Department had to extinguish, but fortunately, there was only a small amount of damage to the room.
