Metro-East Accidents Involve Semi-Trucks

March 22, 2017
On Friday morning, two separate semi-truck accidents delayed commuters on their morning commute. The Illinois State Police responded to an accident on Interstate 64 near the interchange of Illinois 111 at approximately 6 a.m.  The tractor-trailer had overturned and blocked two lanes on the roadway. According to police, the cleanup was expected to take a couple of hours to clear a way for traffic. The other accident happened along Interstate 270 near Illinois 4 with a tractor-trailer also overturning and landing on its side. The truck was on the shoulder of the road and did not block any lanes of traffic. However, the process of emptying the tractor-trailers load and turning the truck back over will require at least one lane of traffic to be closed. Fortunately, there were no injuries in either accident.

Tractor-trailer trucks can weigh several tons depending on the cargo they are transporting. That weight combined with size and speed can result in serious injuries and death during an impact. Tractor-trailer accidents killed 3,602 individuals in 2013, according to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. Similar to any other auto accident, driver negligence is typically responsible. Driving fatigue is one of the most common causes of truck accidents. Federal rules and regulations only prohibit drivers to operate a truck 11 hours at one time and 77 hours during a week. Truck drivers do not always obey these rules causing accidents due to their lack of rest.
